Artist Statement

Using a common language assessment tool as its base, The Cookie Theft: Case Studies takes invented responses to the test image and depicts them visually. Each script represents different types and severities of communication disorders that could occur following a neurological event such as a stroke. The use of colour highlights discourse features speech-language pathologists observes when conducting language evaluations. Repetitions and addition of images speak to changes in fluency and lexical access as well as changes in cognitive processes that impact communication, such as attention and impulse control. Through our choice in medium, we hope to critique the outdated testing materials presently used in speech-language pathology assessments and question their appropriateness for today’s patients and workplaces.
