Season 2016-2017.

Black Box

Our brain, the mysterious Black Box. That incredible structure enclosed inside the skull that controls hundreds of unconscious actions during our daily lives. The black box is that fascinating place which is behind humankind's greatest’s achievements. Birthplace of creativity, thought, love and passion.

The Black Box is a neuroscience talk that is part of the Convergence Initiative. The purpose behind it is to explain the basics of the brain function to an audience composed of non-neuroscientists. Come and join us to listen and learn about the brain, from the electrical signals traveling through neurons to the molecules flowing towards synapses. Let our speakers guide you in this amazing adventure of knowledge and discovery.

THE BLACK BOX

PUBLIC TALK FIRST HALF

There are many approaches to bring neuroscience to a more natural land, however, doesn't exist a better one than taking a tour in the place where all this happen.
The Black Box event on November 25th, started exactly like that, with a guided tour through the laboratories where the neurosciences are unfolded.

Dr. Keith Murai, Dr. Yong Rao, and Dr. Charles Bourque opened their doors to allow a group of students from Concordia Faculty of Fine Arts accessing and experiencing first hand this environment.

After approximately two hours of visit, the students joined a crowd for the public talks uncovering the mechanism used by the brain to perform its function.

Opening Statements by Cristian Zaelzer Ph.D.

Founder & Director of the Convergence Initiative

Filmed and produced by: Kevin Jung-Hoo Park

Dr. Cristian Zaelzer, Founder & Director of Convergence, on a brief introduction on the need to bring the sciences and the arts back together for a mutual benefit and benefit to the society.

Sejal Devla, Ph.D. Candidate from Dr. Von Meyel Lab, guided the public through the core concepts of modern neurosciences. From the diversity and heterogeneity of cellular components inside the brain to the biophysical properties that allow the conduction of electrical signals from one cell to another.

Sejal cover the use of ion channels, neurotransmitters, synapses, as well as problems related to the malfunction of any of these components.

PUBLIC TALK SECOND HALF

The Black Box - Marie Franquin Ph.D. Student

Marie Franquin, Ph.D. Candidate from Dr. Stellwagen Lab, continue the discussion of macro terminology on brain science, describing in her half of the talk the use of brain circuits and brain networks in the information processing and computing.

She talked about techniques used in the laboratory to measure the activity of those networks, as well as the use of brain plasticity on the recruiting of new areas of the cerebral cortex in processes like learning and memory.
